David Coppinger: a brief background

Born in Durban, South Africa in 1952.
Studied Architecture at the University of Natal and graduating from the University of Cape Town in 1979.

While traveling around Europe as a student, took to always carrying a sketchbook and pen.
This developed from a hobby into a full time occupation and I held my first major Exhibition of paintings/drawings at The Cape Gallery in Cape Town in 1982.. This featured a series of paintings that recorded most of the notable buildings in Long street. Long Street is famous for it's Architectural heritage, which ranges from early 18th Century to some early 20th century gems.

This Exhibition led to a series of weekly articles on Long Street in the Cape Argus, the major paper in Cape Town at the time .
Subsequent Exhibitions were held over the years, both in Cape town and in other cities and towns in South Africa and Namibia. Because of my subject matter and the nature of my painting , my work is often included in Centenary and Bicentennial celebrations of small towns!.A number of calendars have been produced, showing my work.

I moved to Australia in 2000 and have been living in Melbourne. This web-site shows many of the paintings that I have produced.

About the Paintings:

All my paintings are a combination of Indian ink line drawing and Artists watercolour, done on a heavyweight watercolour paper.
These materials have been used for centuries and can be relied on not to fade,if kept out of direct sunlight!.
For the last six years I have also been producing Giclee prints of my paintings. Using pigment based inks and mould made etching paper, they are of high quality and provide an alternative for people who do not wish to , or cannot afford to buy original paintings.
